BIOGRAFIA:
Julissa Dura is an uruguayan photographer born in 1996. She started as a self-taught doing selfportaits at the age of fourteen. Since 2013, she has participated in different workshops about photography, theatrical design, art direction and audiovisual script. Also since 2017, Shuli is part of the photography community Women Photograph, and from 2019 is part of Archivo X and works as a resident artist at Colectivo Careta, a space of creation for performatic dissidences. Her work is a window to her true nature, it is based upon the construction of different perceptions and narratives about identity that emerge from her own self and the society and culture she lives in. In her images, each element; such as symbols, scenes or signs, are conceived through a blend of research and playful experimentation, open to the challenge of spontaneous creation. The power of change, the opportunity given by art to embody a new identity or persona whenenever it is needed, is always a liberating and psychologically relieving process for trans people like us that is reflected in Julissa’s photography. In order to create her pictures, Julissa understands photography as a medium with infinite possibilities for visual artists, in which staging and performance are a fundamental part of the composition in her creative process. Prop and costume making or especific ephemeral installations are made as a way to imagine a final picture. Also using digital tools to enhance her work, is frequently another disruptive element in her photographs ; in this way Shuli combines reality and fantasy unmasking the different levels of fiction and documentary that we can find mixed in her work.
